The Future Sound of London – 2018 Calendar Album

The 2017 Calendar Album was an intriguing and generally successful experiment, but there wasn’t much thought within the fanbase that this would be an ongoing series. But in October 2017, the following year’s album was put up for pre-order, as well as two physical calendars. Each calendar came with the same album, making a double purchase unnecessary, and happily the two were split between older and newer images; a music-only option was available from the start this time.

A quick run through the images, then.

January. Calendar 1: Teachings from the Electronic Brain cover. Calendar 2: Shots of Sheuneen swimming from the ‘Far-out Son of Lung‘ video, with technical text about voltage, fax and radio.

February. Calendar 1: A montage of images, including several from the Dead Cities book, the ‘Lifeforms‘ single cover and the full From the Archives Vol. 2 cover image, including Spikey. Calendar 2: Black and white circuit board imagery.

March. Calendar 1: The ‘My Kingdom’ cover with a newly created ‘Spikey‘ model. Calendar 2: Long exposure shot of stars moving over a stark, rocky landscape.

April. Calendar 1: 1991 ‘Papua New Guinea’ cover. Calendar 2: Monochrome photos of Gaz and Brian, with binary.

May. Calendar 1: Ignition of the Sun cover. Calendar 2: Volcanic lake photo with “Frozen organic oxygen” text, water damage effect and EBV logo.

June. Calendar 1: Archived : Environmental : Views 3LP cover. Calendar 2: FSOL Environments text with Alan Dougans cityscape photography.

July. Calendar 1: The Far-out Son of Lung cover. Calendar 2: Mirrored sea shore photo from From the Archives Vol. 1 booklet, with different colour grading.

August. Calendar 1: Accelerator 2016 reissue cover, with FSOL pyramid logo and Japanese text from the album’s rear cover. Calendar 2: Archived 8 CD booklet inner spread featuring the full artwork template.

September. Calendar 1: ‘Stakker Humanoid’ text with a screenshot from the Eurotechno video. Calendar 2: Environments 3 CD booklet middle spread.

October. Calendar 1: Lifeforms cover. Calendar 2: Pages two and seven from the Archived 8 CD booklet, in artwork template.

November. Calendar 1: From the Archives Vol. 1 and 3 digital covers. Calendar 2: Spikeys and temple shot from My Kingdom Re-Imagined.

December. Calendar 1: Environment Six and 6.5 CD covers. Calendar 2: A collage, with a tree photograph overlaid with text about medicine, a towerblock photo, a couple of press cutting, the Herd Killing, curves and EBV logos, and text reading “The Future Sound of London I Dream of Wires”.

In the bottom right corner of each page are the curves and EBV logos, and the 1991 ‘Papua New Guinea‘ cover.

The album itself is comparable with the previous year’s, with eight FSOL pieces, tracks from Synthi A and Humanoid, and two new aliases: Filter and Pulses, and AnALOguE COntRoLleD SolENoiDs. As the year progressed, more information was given with the tracks, with pieces announced as outtakes from Environment Six and From the Archives Vol. 9, and dating from the early ’90s through to the late ’10s. Many of the tracks feature outro environments, although there is no attempt to create ‘flow’ by mirroring these between pieces. Other than a couple of clearly ’90s pieces – ‘303 hf5’ and ‘Transmission Edit 6’ – the material generally feels like it could come from a new album. ‘303 hf5’ is also noticeably louder than the rest of the album, making it a slightly jarring listen. The tracks are a touch longer than most pieces from this era, with every track running longer than three minutes, and most around the five minute mark, which results in a decent length record.

The album was released in lossless audio for the first time in 2021, when it appeared on the group’s Bandcamp page. At this point, ‘Control Vista’ was swapped from a Filter and Pulses track to one by FSOL:Digitana.

Release date: 28th October 2017 (Calendars), 20th January-29th December 2018 (Album).
