Mental Cube – So This is Love

After a run of increasingly popular techno and hardcore releases on Jumpin’ & Pumpin’, Brian and Garry returned to Debut for the housey ‘So This is Love’ single. The first new Mental Cube material to be released since the hugely popular debut EP, ‘So This is Love’ is actually strikingly different from any of those first three tracks.

Much more at home on Debut than J&P, the release is one of a couple of house numbers the group released in mid-’91, highlighting their continued eagerness to experiment. This exploration continued with the paid relocating to New York to record a couple of remixes. Made at Square Bass Studios, and mixed further afield in Santa Monica, California, the two rare outings away from Earthbeat were compiled to make up the 12″s b-side. One of these, the ‘Santa Monica Mix’ of ‘Q‘, undoubtedly helped sales of the single, as the track had proved hugely popular. The mix would go on to be released on the ‘Q’ singles licensed to France and Belgium.

Buggy’s cover, striking with its warning stripes, moves away from his usual blocky lettering, employing something similar to what would become the standard FSOL font from the Virgin era onwards. He also throws in the phrase “pretty brutal” on the back cover, alongside the now familiar Freaky Deek and Earthbeat logos. Garry is once again listed as Coby on the sleeve. FSOL are producers. The ‘Neo-Neo Mix’ is listed as simply ‘Neo Neo’ on the label.

Release date: June 1991.
