The Future Sound of London – Papua New Guinea (Qube Mix)

Released on:
Papua New Guinea

Runtime: 4:32

Pretty much the main reason the original 1991 12″ of ‘Papua New Guinea’ goes for much higher prices than their other J&P era singles, the ‘Qube Mix’ has never been reissued, other than on a Simply Vinyl repressing of the single in 2003. While the similarly vinyl-exclusive ‘Monsoon Mix’ from 1992 ended up on PNG Remix Anthology bundled with 2001’s Accelerator reissue, the ‘Qube Mix’ is a real FSOL rarity.

As with the ‘Dumb Child of Q‘ mix, the ‘Qube Mix’ is developed from an earlier version of the track, with a mid-heavy bassline, entirely different drums and many of the more atmospheric samples missing. The thicker bassline means the Dead Can Dance sample, with its backing drone, has almost all its bottom end EQ’d out. The development of the track can be read in a 2006 Sound on Sound interview, which references many of these changes.
