‘Quazi’ is an unusual track. Whereas most early Passion Music tracks will move from one section to another, linked by breakdowns and dynamic shifts, ‘Quazi’ moves relentlessly forward on a 4/4 kick and two-note synth sample, barely changing start to finish. Using this as a simple canvas, Brian and Garry layer colours and samples from all ends of the electronic spectrum, from some rave-adjacent techno stabs that are full-on 1991, to bird field recordings that run close to Lifeforms-esque atmospherics, a pensive string melody, gurgling ’70s-style analogue synth bubbles, a spy film flute melody and computer game explosions. Although it has melody coming out of its many orifices, the track’s focus is entirely on atmosphere: the field recordings and strings, in particular, feel much closer to Virgin-era FSOL than even Accelerator, even if the form is entirely rooted in dance music. What feels like a very minimal track due to its hypnotic, repetitive elements, is actually an astonishingly detailed piece when listened to close up. Unsurprisingly, ‘Quazi’ was chosen to open Fuzzy Logic, and later appeared on Earthbeat.
