Probably the most famous mix of ‘People Livin’ Today‘, due to being favoured by DJs and thus included on Earthbeat, the ‘Med Mix’ is the most heavily indebted to Ibiza-friendly Eurodance music, the title even suggestive of the Mediterranean. In this version, the bleepy synth melody of the original is replaced by acoustic guitar samples and a new pan pipe melody. With the rave-aligned synths removed, and additional acoustic instrumentation, the track falls fully into what is often called Balearic house: uplifting, escapist dance music suggestive of tropical beaches. It’s a world away from what most FSOL fans would normally associate with the band’s music, but it does its job very well. As someone who grew up in the ’90s and, partially thanks to FSOL and their ilk, got into electronic and dance music at a young age, ‘People Livin’ Today’ really appealed to the side of me that had bought countless Eurotrance singles in 1999. In hindsight, it’s hard to take the track too seriously, but I still retain a certain fondness for the ‘Med Mix’.
