Following one stripped down techno-aligned track, ‘Auto Pimp’ continues in a similar direction. The opening environment is unlisted on the US cassette edition of Tales of Ephidrina, but the somewhat confusing flowchart in the liner notes, and the spoken sample used, suggest it’s probably called ‘It’s Him’, even though ‘Offspring’ is actually listed at that point on the graph. “It’s him… it’s all ’cause of him!” a man shouts, followed by some helicopter sounds, and then the track starts in full. Unlike ‘Ephidrena’, the kick drum pulse is back to normal techno speed again, but it is only joined by heavily filtered hi-hats, giving it a stark, skeletal feel and no groove, making it surprisingly hard to dance to. Synth string pads and a plucked melody are the main focus, the pads in particular giving it a melancholic, nocturnal vibe. As with much of the album, the track is a touch more minimal and repetitive than usual for FSOL, but repeated listens reveal more and more layers, the usual FSOL samples layered slightly lower in the mix but very much present. The two minute beatless outro section is a particular highlight, making it one of my favourites on the album. The track was first broadcast two months prior to the album’s release, on the second Kiss Transmission.
