Ok, straight out of the gate: I fucking hate Terence McKenna. I don’t know whether it’s the utter bollocks he spouted, or the smug way he went about it, but every time I hear his nasal voice I want to hit something.
That makes ‘Re:Iteration (FSOL Mix)’ one of my least listened-to Future Sound of London tracks. McKenna’s drawl is all over the track, making it almost unlistenable to me. Which is a shame, as the music is excellent. Brian and Garry cut various synth sounds from the original – called ‘Re:Evolution’, re-titling of remixes being a FSOL convention at this point – and added in a lot of their own samples, resulting in a track that runs quite close to the abstract environments heard on the band’s ’93 and ’94 transmissions. At the five minute point, McKenna fucks off, and things get more traditionally musical: there’s a gentle tabla rhythm, and synth pads come to the fore. This last four minute section is captivating, sounding – as with the Curve and Sylvian/Fripp remixes – like a lost Lifeforms-era track. A tremendous shame one has to sit through the first half of the track to get to it. The remix was created for The Shamen’s 1993 remix album, Different Drum, a rare example of a FSOL mix not available on a single. It later appeared on a budget remix compilation entitled Hystericool.
