Electronic musicians occasionally have a habit of remixing their own tracks so much that they no longer sound anything like the originals. Underworld are excellent at this. They also sometimes like putting out totally unrelated pieces of music under the guise of remixes (I’m looking at you, Aphex). So which is ‘Moscow (Remix)’? After many, many years of listening, I’m yet to hear even a hint of anything from the original ‘Moscow‘, other than them being in the same tempo. The spy theme feel of the original is gone, replaced by a doom-laden pounding techno track, complete with church bell samples and horror screams. It’s relatively straight-forward for the band, lacking the structural diversions and layers of weird samples that normally give a FSOL track its unique identity, but at the same time, it does its own simplistic job incredibly well, and is one of my favourite Accelerator-era tracks. I just don’t hear any relation to the original in there.
