The Future Sound of London – First Death in the Family

Released on:
Dead Cities

Runtime: 2:19

A rare thing here: according to the credits, ‘First Death in the Family’ is a Brian solo track. Recorded on an unscheduled Baker St-Dollis Hill day trip, further adding weight to Baker St. being the location of Brian’s home at the time, it appears to have been recorded by Dougans on a random solo excursion to Earthbeat. The track has an oddly medieval feel to it, slowly marching drums, modal flute melodies, an organ-like synth. A funeral march from hundreds of years ago, translated into modern electronics. It’s a fairly simple piece of music, quite lo-fi sounding, and a very strange way to end Dead Cities. But I’ve spoken about their odd idea of album closers before. Of course, it isn’t quite the end of the album…
