Neotropic’s one and only single from her second album Mr. Brubaker’s Strawberry Alarm Clock, ‘Ultra Freaky Orange’, featured a remix by Brian on his own, under the alias Bin Dogs. Brian contributed to the main track itself – credited with “data manipulation” – and the whole era tied in quite well with where FSOL were at at the time, with huge, distorted breakbeats and sampling of psychedelic music. His remix, titled ‘Ultra Freaky Alarm Clock’, is barely recognisable as being related to the Barry Gray-sampling original, built around loops of staggered drum fills, tambourine, vocals, organ, guitar strums and electronic buzzing. It’s a weird track and quite a difficult listen, awkwardly looping around and never achieving a groove or atmosphere. FSOL-wise, it feels like a close cousin to ‘Popadom’ from the same era, constantly feeling like a record on skip; one can imagine hearing it on the Fun Radio transmission or first Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble mix from the same era. It would be the last track new production by either Dougans or Cobain for another four years.
