The Future Sound of London – Papua New Guinea (Blue States Full Length Mix)

Released on:
Accelerator / Papua New Guinea Mix Anthology

Runtime:
5:46

It’s quite weird that Blue States’s remix of ‘Papua New Guinea‘ is called the ‘Blue States Full Length Mix’, and Ralph Tee’s radio edit of the mix is called ‘Blue States Mix’. Oh well.

Downtempo electronic project Blue States feels like a very sensible choice of remixer at this point in FSOL’s career: his sound, blending mellow electronics with guitar, strings, gentle drum loops and such is somewhat in line with the more acoustic direction of the impending Amorphous project. Indeed, the remix is almost how one would imagine a gentle post-rock group or even nu-jazz outfit performing the track, jazzy drums and percussion, guitars, mellotron strings, flutes, double bass. The original’s synth pads make a subtle appearance, but it’s mostly just the vocals that link it to FSOL.

Of all the 2001 remixes, this is the one that takes me back to that time the most, for some reason. I always thought it was beautiful, and I listened to it and the Simian mix a lot in September ’01, them coming from the first FSOL release in four and a half years. To this day I still think it’s a fantastic version, and makes me wonder why I don’t listen to it more often.
