The Amorphous Androgynous – Billy the Onion

And it’s back into psychedelic jam band mode again. Named after the track’s harmonica player, Billy ‘the Onion’ Jones, the piece is funky psychedelic blues, led by Mikey Rowe’s hammond organ and moog melodies, especially in the groovy descending chorus melody and Gary Lucas’s slide guitar. It’s the exact opposite of what I want from music, really, but I actually really enjoy this track. Even the almost overbearing clutter of so many instruments doesn’t bother me so much here. It’s very hard to hear any FSOL in the track at all – little in the way of obvious processing or odd samples, other than the delay-coated outro – but it does its job really well. Billy himself was a chance meeting in a Swindon pub, Gaz having been to see Gary Lucas perform with The Magic Band: a moment of serendipity.
