Undoubtedly one of the highlights of the initial From the Archives releases, ‘Turn Around’ is a Lifeforms era track that really should have been on the album. Utilising the same distorted guitar, saxophone, field recordings and NASA samples as ‘Among Myselves‘, as well as a rhythmic loop from the ‘Lifeforms‘ single, it’s very heavily tied to the album, but works remarkably as its own piece. An epic seven minute track built around multiple layers of thick synth chords and acoustic percussion, it feels grand in a way many FSOL tracks don’t, having more in common with their Virgin-era remixes than the bulk of their original tracks. Throughout the track, the usual array of samples are triggered, adding to the dense texture, and – unusually – a synth solo and electric guitar improvisation lead much of the piece. A stunning piece of music, and one of my all-time FSOL favourites, the kind of track that makes me glad for the From the Archives series, even at a point when the albums were a little patchy. The 2012 enhanced edition crossfades straight into the following track.
