First heard on the 1994 Essential Mix, this Lifeforms era track is an intriguing blend of styles: the drums are built from odd samples, drum machines and acoustic percussion, giving the track an odd mix of ambient techno and breakbeat sounds; the melodies are largely bright and synthetic, but with occasional edgier, jazzy samples and melancholic vocals. It was first heard in 2006 on the band’s MySpace page as ‘Archived 0011’, and appeared a few months prior to its release on Electric Brain Storms 0.5. Seemingly popular with the band and fans, it’s a strange one that I’ve never fully engaged with. The enhanced edition adds no environment, simply snappily cutting straight to the following track. The very first digital release was tagged ‘The Woodlands’.
