The Amorphous Androgynous – Solid Steel Radio Cartel Mix (22/11/13)

The second Amorphous Androgynous mix for Solid Steel, this show was broadcast a few days after the CD editions of The Cartel Vol. 1 & 2 started shipping from FSOLDigital, and was created to promote the albums.

The mix opens with police sirens and a sample from American Gangster – “everybody’s stealing, dealing…” – followed by ‘Watching the Watcher’. More sirens and speech follows, and then it’s ‘The Wasp’, incorporating the “alright, let’s get the fuck outta here” sample as previously heard at the start of ‘Exchanged‘. The whole mix is interspersed with spoken samples, foley, gunshots and other noises from ’70s movies. “Don’t let her dominate you. Be yourself”; “Come out with your hands up!” The following track is by the Howard Robert Orchestra and is supposedly called ‘Heatwave’, although I can’t find reference to said track anywhere online. It’s not a FSOL mix without at least one tracklist error… The track ’70s library music piece features American cops shouting over the middle.

“Perhaps you underestimated the situation…” – more unidentified movie dialogue. ‘Billion Breaks’ is chopped and glitched in the middle, before going into an extended outro section, followed by elements of the track slowed down dramatically as a kind of weird environment. “Detective Richie Roberts: Judges, lawyers, cops, politicians. They stop bringing dope into this country, about a hundred thousand people are gonna be out of a job,” – more American Gangster to close the track. ‘Regrets and Last Respects’ ends on the usual Amorphous rook calls, which have been in regular rotation for over a decade by this point. The second and final outside piece on the mix is from Jacques Brel, whose ‘Knokke le Zoute’ goes through the usual Dougans/Cobain mangling with some bits slowed down and various effects added.

“I think I know something… Go ahead. I didn’t before. Look at them. Look at them. There’s something strange about you. I could feel it. But I’ve got to warn you, I could feel it. you won’t like what you see. Static in my head whenever I was near you. I knew it,” – dialogue between two characters in the 1994 film The Shadow.

A run of more atmospheric pieces follows, with ‘Tap-Up’ and ‘Tunnel Sequence’. “You’re the one who looked me up last year” is a dialogue sample from an episode of classic crime drama Kojak. After another unidentified spoken sample – “I can assure you, the situation will be resolved as quickly as possible, everybody’s on it” – the final track is ‘The Bug’, followed by classic Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble sample “hey what’s up man, how you doing?”, and some violin fading to nothing.

The mix was made available for download to Solid Steel subscribers following the broadcast, and has since been shared among fans, from which the tracklist is taken; the set can still be listened to on the Solid Steel Soundcloud page.
