Humanoid – The Deep

Released on:
Global
The Deep

Also known as:
The Deep (Extended LP Version)

Runtime: 4:32

After a run of semi-decent tracks, Global dips again with ‘The Deep’, one of four tracks on the album recorded by Peter Black after Brian Dougans’s departure from the project. While Dougans was in Glasgow getting legal help, Black completed the album, writing several original songs. One of the results was ‘The Deep’, a pretty bland house track, featuring Ben Ofoedu rapping. Black’s contributions to the album stand out largely by their simplicity: while even compromised numbers like ‘Slam‘ feature dense and varied arrangements, ‘The Deep’ is utterly straight-forward: the backing track is pretty much left to run while Ofoedu raps, with no elements coming in to keep the track interesting. The tempo and bass sound suggest an attempt at deep house – no doubt inspiring the track’s name – but, as with a lot of British house of the time, it fails to capture the vibe of its Chicago influences. Larry Heard this ain’t.

Perversely, the track ended up being the fourth single from Global. The 7″ of that release is the only Humanoid release not to feature Dougans in any capacity.
