Humanoid – The Deep

The fourth and final ‘main’ single from Global, ‘The Deep’ has the dubious honour of being the only single in the Dougans / Cobain catalogue to feature no contribution from either member on the title track. Written and performed by Peter Black when asked to complete the Global after Dougans’s departure, and with a rap by Ben Ofoedu, the track is of very minimal interest to anyone other than the hardiest of FSOL completists.

The 12″ features two new mixes of the track by Black, both of which are notable improvements on the original (which appears here labelled, confusingly, ‘Extended LP Version’). The single’s saving grace is the inclusion on the 12″ of an extended mix of ‘Cry Baby’, an actual acid track produced by Dougans and Laker. The track, too, is labelled ‘Extended LP Version’, despite being more than a minute longer than the actual LP version. The 7″ includes an uncredited edit of the ‘Into the Abyss’ mix. At this point, it seems accuracy was of little interest to Westside Records.
