Amorphous Androgynous – Sky-Scraper

Released on:
Liquid Insects

Runtime: 4:22

One of the most obscure tracks in the band’s catalogue, ‘Sky-Scraper’ has only ever been released on the long-deleted US-only 12″ single of ‘Liquid Insects’, and is the only ’90s-style Amorphous track not to feature on an album.

It’s immediately clear why the track itself didn’t make the album: the sound is quite similar to the exclusive tracks from the early Kiss Test Transmissions like ‘Plazmatical’ and ‘Tokyo Travel’: less dance-oriented than Accelerator, but lacking the sample-collage atmospherics of Tales of Ephidrina. Indeed, if you pushed the kick drum up in the mix a little it’d still fare well in clubs, being a largely uplifting track led by bright synth stabs and a funky bassline. There are still samples in the mix: a wordless female vocal loop provides counterpoint to the synths, and various flutes and wailing sounds feature in the background, adding a slightly darker touch to the track. Nevertheless, it definitely feels like a track trapped between eras, an idea of what a late 1992/early 1993 FSOL album might have sounded like if one had existed.
