The biggest disappointment on first play of The Otherness had to have been ‘Chinese Whispers’. When promised with three new unreleased tracks from the Isness sessions, I’m not sure anybody was hoping one of them would be a one minute sound collage built from elements of tracks on the album. It’s intriguing, especially when playing ‘spot the sample’ – ‘The Lovers’, ‘Divinity’, ‘Her Tongue is Like a Jellyfish’ and ‘High Tide on the Sea of Flesh’ are the most obvious ones, but there are undoubtedly many more – but as a track in its own right, it’s a bit… pointless.
