Unreleased tracks

There are, undoubtedly, thousands of unreleased pieces in the band’s vaults. With most of the mid ’90s era now plundered for From the Archives releases, there are still boxes full of pre-Virgin tapes that are yet to be released, several albums’ worth of Amorphous Androgynous psychedelic material, and who knows how many hours of more recent tracks lying around. We’ll never hear most of it, even at the band’s current release rate, but there are, at least, some tracks known from transmissions, leaks and live performances. Here’s a list of known stuff, and where to find it.

Transmission material
There are a lot of unknown, unnamed tracks and environments in the band’s transmissions, but a few have been given names over the years, which I will focus on here. I’ll probably try and cross-reference the unnamed tracks at some point in the future.

Leaks
Over the years, a number of tracks have leaked from the band’s archives, one way or another. Here is a brief overview.

She Fell Backwards. Full seven minute version.
Dead Dolphin 2. Mid ’90s breaks track.
Egypt (Original). ‘End of the World‘ minus the Pemberton strings.
Eleven Hot Knives. 1992 atmospheric ambient techno piece.
A Glitch in Cellular Member (Recollection). An early demo combining the two tracks.
Lifeform Album Varient. An alternate mix of ‘Plasmatik‘.
Switzerland. An extended version.
Under Pass. A 15 minute track with 303 lines, probably from 1992.

Scrapped releases
Many, many releases have been scrapped, largely due to the band’s overly prolific workload. Here is a brief overview.

Harm.

A one-off alias from 1991, expected to release a self-titled 12″ on one of the Passion Music labels, which never happened.

Yage – New Life Forms
A three track 12″ delivered to Jumpin’ & Pumpin’ in late ’91/early ’92. Infamously turned down by the label, the lead track went on to be the title track of the first Virgin FSOL album. The EP’s remaining tracks remain unknown.

Eggshell
A third single from Lifeforms that never surfaced. ‘Eggshell‘ was assigned Virgin and Astralwerks catalogue numbers (VSCDT 1520/ASW6140), but was apparently never completed. ‘Climbing‘ is quite possibly a track recorded for it.

Environments
While the 2007 version is believed to be a fairly accurate recreation of the original 1994 album, there are undoubtedly differences, and that earlier Amorphous Androgynous version remains lost to time.

Slider
A mooted second single from ISDN, even given a catalogue number by Virgin (VSCDT 1650), but one that was never completed. The single’s 7″ edit was included on Electric Brain Storm 11.

ISDN 2
Mentioned on the old EBV site as an album that was scrapped in favour of the white reissue of the original ISDN. A second album of 1994 transmission tracks, perhaps.

Playstation Game
In a late 1994 interview, Gaz spoke about working with Sony on a game for their upcoming next generation console, which turned out to be the Playstation 1. Nothing else has ever been heard.

Glass
The third and final single from Dead Cities was fairly well developed before the band moved onto psychedelic pastures, with ‘Glacier (Part 1)‘, ‘Glacier (Part 2)‘ and an early version of ‘I Turn to Face the Sun’ all recorded for it. There was also rumour of an Eno collaboration for the single.

Yage: The Film
Mentioned countless times throughout the 1990s, the Yage film was never completed. A full script appears in The Most Important Moments in a Life.

The Mello Hippo Disco Show
A TV, radio and toy multimedia concept developed with Pete Fowler. It seems TV stations thought an hour of an animated hippy and his hippo sidekick babbling over psychedelic music wasn’t quite what they were after, and a full series was never developed. The soundtrack to the TV pilot was later released in The Pod Room.

FSOL DVD
A DVD of music videos was in discussion in the early ’00s, and was expected to accompany the Teachings from the Electronic Brain Best Of album. Sadly, rights issues got in the way, and with physical media on the continual decline, it looks unlikely a release of the band’s groundbreaking ’90s video work will ever happen.

Divinity
An album-length single of ‘Divinity’ variations, accompanied by a music video directed by the band, was long awaited between 2003 and 2004. Eventually, a three track radio promo was released, with the remaining reworkings appearing on The Otherness, and the video lost to the void.

Alice in Ultraland Film
Discussed around the release of Alice in Ultraland, especially in context of ‘The Wicker Doll‘ which apparently started out life as an FSOL track created for the film’s soundtrack. Nothing has been heard since.

Globular DVD
A proposed 5.1 DTS DVD release of A Gigantic Globular Burst of Anti-Static was listed on a hidden page on FSOLDigital in 2006. The page wasn’t quite as hidden as hoped, however, and several people attempted to order. Refunds were given as the product was still in development at the time, and DTS eventually passed on the idea, leaving the stereo release as the only version.

Part-Sub-Merged DVD
Four Forests contains only a small number of Part-Sub-Merged tracks recorded to soundtrack the project’s film, although this is yet another release that has since fallen off the radar.

The Greatest Trips
An Amorphous Androgynous ‘Best Of’ compilation, probably considered to cash in on the new found interest in the group after the success of the Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble CD compilations. It never surfaced, possibly due to the expense of licensing tracks from the then owners.

Shhh Soundtrack
FSOL were contracted to soundtrack a horror film called Shhh, and also provide a ‘film remix’, effectively reworking the entire film’s score, foley and dialogue – and possibly visuals – in what would be an exciting new project. The film ended up stuck in development hell, and only two tracks – ‘The Equevelants‘ and ‘shhh df -10‘ have been released.

Monsterism Island Soundtrack
In the ’00s, Pete Fowler started to develop a TV cartoon called Monsterism Island, and Brian and Gaz were expected to provide the soundtrack. Once again, the show was not picked up by a network, and the music remains unreleased.

Mother
A planned Amorphous single from the early ’10s which never materialised; the lead track is expected to appear on Listening Beyond the Head Chakra.

2012, The New Love Poetry, Wobbly Oozescapes
Three albums advertised as ‘available from FSOLDigital’ in the booklet for The Peppermint Tree. Brian has confirmed that all three represent recorded material, but it seems that Gaz is far less inclined to spend his time trawling through archives, and thus we may never hear these records.

Cosmic Jukebox Album
Briefly mentioned in the early ’00s, this was intended to be an album of remixes of material from EMI’s Harvest Records vaults. While the band eventually signed to Harvest for the release of Alice in Ultraland, the remix album never surfaced.

In 2 Minds
A DVD of the 2009 FSOL Athens show, with various curios expected to appear as DVD extras. The footage has, apparently, been lost.

Isness Re-Recording
A new version of The Isness was mooted in 2008, in an attempt to create a mix the band were 100% happy with. Press releases for the first Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble CD even referenced the re-release. Needless to say, it never happened.
