Humanoid – Stakker Humanoid ’92

Following the huge success of 1992’s ‘Papua New Guinea’ release, and having won back rights to the Humanoid catalogue, Brian set about reissuing ‘Stakker Humanoid’, with Garry in tow on remixing duties. Similarly to the ‘Papua’ reissue, a slew of new versions were released, put out as an eight track CD, a 12″ with slight differences, casual listener-friendly 7″ and cassette versions, and a full-colour sleeve. Even the 12″ release was given numerous issues on coloured vinyl, on plain black and plain green, as well as numerous marbled colours: brown, purple, green, grey, pink, black, white, blue, translucent blue, pale blue, maroon and red. FSOL superfan Rob Cagni may be the only fan in the world to own all 14 variants.

Unlike ‘Papua New Guinea’, no other artists were contracted to remix the track, with all new versions produced in-house at Earthbeat. The new versions show somewhat less variation than the ‘Papua’ mixes, although Garry’s melodic ’94’ Mix (credited as ‘Coby’s ’94 Mix’, ‘Garry Cobain’s ’94 Mix’, ‘Cobain Mix ’94’ on various sleeves and covers) is beautiful, and the Smart Systems versions heads off into the expected rave territory. Also unlike ‘Papua’, the three main versions from 1988 were included in the package, as well as a previous compilation exclusive from 1989.

The highly anticipated reissue was licensed to a couple of international labels, with Dutch music empire Dureco putting out a similar version to the J&P edition; the usually reliable German imprint ZYX, in contrast, contracted Eurodance producer Udo Sandmann to provide a new remix under the name 3 Steps 2 Heaven. The less said about this version the better.

The questionable ZYX release.

Given a rare chance to provide a full-colour sleeve, Buggy went to town, blending imagery from the original ‘Stakker Humanoid’ video with more up-to-date imagery. The FSOL pyramid found its way to the front of the CD and cassette editions and the rear of the two vinyl versions, with the Earthbeat logo appearing on both sides of all releases. Bugs also used it as an opportunity to throw in some fairly daft text in a near indecipherable font. An attempt at translation has come out as:

Front:
485YE127PYT
FUCK YO15 BUG
CUTTIBW-1891
BUGGY G 92
RIPHEAD LARK

Back:
BUGGY G RIPHEAD
MARK MCCLEAN THE ONLY
CREATOR – CODE – BUGGY G
1900-1992 BPX 080 4J-XB
XY – 820 – 0 < Z=-X/YX FLUID INTERGER _> 8MAZZ 41
BUZZ THE DEAD HEADZ

The cassette cover features the rather more blunt STAKKER 92 MOTHER FUC

Corrections are more than happily welcomed.

While not matching the peaks of the original 1988 release or ‘Papua’s chart run, the single still charted at number 40 in the UK.
